This week in History we've been learning more about Pablo Picasso's Guernica, and we did several murals in groups. Here you can see them.

This week we have been practising a poem to recite/read to other classes. Some of the students visited their brothers or sisters in other classes and recited /read the poem with the poster to show all the things the old woman ate. Here is the poem which is called "There was an old woman"

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly,
I don't know why she swallowed a fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a bird,
How absurd! to swallow a bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a cat,
Imagine that! to swallow a cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a dog,
What a hog! to swallow a dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a goat,
Just opened her throat! to swallow a goat,
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.

There was an old woman who swallowed a cow,
I don't know how she swallowed a cow!
She swallowed the cow to catch the goat,
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
Perhaps she'll die.
There was an old woman who swallowed a horse,
She's dead, of course!

Poet's Corner

After talking to 6C about the famous author Roald Dahl, I was looking up some of his poems in Internet. You can have a lot of fun with poems if you learn to recite them with the correct rhythm. Here is one with audio so you can listen to the pronunciation.

Here is another one about how to torture your teacher, although some of you are already experts!

How to Torture Your Teacher

• Only raise your hand when
• you want to sharpen your pencil
• or go to the bathroom.
• Repeat every ten minutes.

• Never raise your hand
• when you want to answer a question;
• instead, yell, “Oooh! Oooh! Oooh!”
• and then, when the teacher calls on you,
• say, “I forgot what I was going to say.”

• Lean your chair back,
• take off your shoes, and
• put your feet up on your desk.
• Act surprised when the teacher
• puts all four legs of your chair back on the floor.

• Drop the eraser end of your pencil
• on your desk.
• See how high it will bounce.

• Drop your books on the floor.
• See how loud a noise you can make.

• Hum.
• Get all your friends to join in.

• Hold your nose,
• make a face, and say, “P.U.!”
• Fan the air away from your face,
• and point to the kid in front of you.

• On the last day of school,
• lead your classmates in chanting:
“No more pencils!
• No more books!
• No more teachers’
• dirty looks!”

• Then, on your way out
• the door, tell the teacher,
• “Bet you’re looking forward
• to summer vacation this year.
• But I’ll sure miss you.
• You’re the best teacher
• I’ve ever had.”

The End

Book summaries

Look at all these book summaries the 6th years have done this month! This is a selection of the best decorated ones.

I LOVE READING!

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers." - Charles William Eliot.

Here are some more quotes about reading:
