Unit 2 Social Science Summary in Spanish

Hi everyone!

Here is the summary in Spanish for unit 2 of Social Science, just in case you have problems getting into Classroom. Remember to answer the questions for homework this weekend.



La Edad Moderna comenzó con el descubrimiento de América en 1492 y terminó con la Revolución francesa en 1789.

La sociedad estaba dividida en tres grupos: el clero, la nobleza y la plebe. Los nobles y el clero tenían privilegios, y la plebe no.


En 1469 se casaron Fernando de Aragón e Isabel de Castilla. Más tarde llegaron a ser conocidos como los Reyes Católicos.


Fernando e Isabel establecieron la Inquisición en 1478. Era una organización con poderes especiales para perseguir a aquellas personas que no seguían la religión católica. La Inquisición arrestaba e interrogaba a las personas. En algunas ocasiones, los arrestados eran torturados y asesinados.


Los  Reyes Católicos unieron los reinos de Castilla y Aragón para formar un gran reino, crearon un Estado moderno y expandieron su reino para incluir las islas Canarias, Melilla y Navarra. También conquistaron Granada y dieron dinero a Cristóbal Colón para que realizara su expedición.


Muchos exploradores viajaron a tierras lejanas, donde descubrieron y conquistaron nuevos territorios. Por ese motivo, esta época es conocida como la edad de los descubrimientos. 

  

En los siglos xvi y xvii, el país estaba gobernado por la dinastía de los Austrias. Durante su reinado, España se convirtió en un gran imperio y tenía terrenos en Europa, Asia, África y América. Al principio del siglo xviii, la dinastía de los Austrias finalizó su reinado. Los reyes de esta dinastía fueron: Carlos V, Felipe II, Felipe III, Felipe IV y Carlos II.


Después de la muerte de Carlos II en 1700, hubo una guerra entre España y otros países europeos. España perdió muchos territorios y poder en Europa. La nueva dinastía regente en España fue la de los Borbones. El primero fue Felipe V, quien centralizó el Gobierno y dividió el país en provincias. En la segunda mitad del siglo xviii reinaba Carlos III, quien creó nuevas instituciones y modernizó las ciudades.



Durante el período de la dinastía de los Austrias hubo muchos artistas y escritores españoles famosos. A este período se le denominó el siglo de oro. Algunos de los artistas que se hicieron famosos durante esta época fueron El Greco, Murillo y Velázquez. Fueron escritores famosos de esta época Tirso de Molina, Cervantes y Lope de Vega.

Pablo Picasso and Guernica


Do you remember when we visited the Reina Sofía museum and we saw Guernica?

In Social Science we have been learning about contemporary history and Guernica was mentioned but do you really understand what it symbolises?
Next week you are going to produce your own A4 version of Guernica in Art, but before you do that you need to take a look at these videos. The first one explains the symbolism that Picasso included in his work of art:
